Why do so many people want to argue that there's no housing shortfall?

You may have noticed a lot of my posts here begin with something I saw on Twitter. I don’t take a lot of what I see on there very seriously, but I also learn a lot, and I do get a lot of ideas. This is one of those posts. I saw this tweet yesterday:

Most of the comments, including a few housing folks I follow, disagree strongly and/or consider the sentiment laughable. As a matter of housing costs, yes, it’s wrong. What does the cost of a house or rent have to do with the ability of a resident to fix or build things? There are so many circuitous arguments that people come up with to avoid the plain conclusion that housing demand currently outstrips supply. How did we get a to a point where that is controversial, and where addressing it is controversial?
