What is NIMBYism?

Many of the posts here are fleshed out versions of notes I take or thoughts I have, which I often quickly write to revisit at some later date. Going though my long list of notes/ideas the other day, this jumped out at me:

How did housing come to be seen as a political or ideological thing? How on earth did build nothing new anywhere ever come to be a normal and standard belief of so many people? What is actually going on here?
